Building a mobile app is easier when you know the road ahead. These are the stages every well-run app project goes through, from the first conversation to the App Store and Google Play, and what you should expect at each step.
1. Discovery
Define the problem, the users and the goals. Map the key journeys, list the systems the app must connect to and decide what the first release must do. The output is a prioritised roadmap and a costed plan.
2. Product and UX design
Designers turn the roadmap into flows, wireframes and interactive prototypes that you can try on a phone before anything is built. Testing prototypes with real users is the cheapest place to find problems.
3. Choosing the technology
Cross-platform frameworks such as React Native and Flutter let one team build for iOS and Android and often reach the market sooner. Native development with Swift and Kotlin suits graphics-heavy apps and deep hardware integration. The right choice depends on your product, your team and your plans.
4. Building the app and the backend
Most apps need a backend for user accounts, data, notifications, payments and an admin panel. The team builds in short iterations, with a working demo each week so you can steer as you go.
5. Testing
- Automated tests on the logic that matters most
- Testing on real iOS and Android devices and a range of screen sizes
- Performance, battery and poor-network testing
- Security review of sign-in, data storage and APIs
- Accessibility checks for text size, contrast and screen readers
6. Launching on the App Store and Google Play
Both stores review apps before release, and Apple's review can ask for changes, so allow time for it. Prepare store listings, screenshots, a privacy policy and the data-use declarations the stores require.
7. Support and improvement
After launch, monitor crashes and usage, fix issues quickly and plan the next releases from real data. Apps also need updates as new versions of iOS and Android arrive.
How long does it take?
A focused first release typically takes two to four months after discovery, although complexity changes that. A smaller launch gets you real feedback sooner, which is usually worth more than a longer wish list.
