Designing offline-first apps for low-bandwidth users

Hand sketching interface wireframes with a pen

For many of the people who use our clients' apps, a stable connection is a luxury. Drivers on highways, students in smaller towns and field teams in warehouses all move in and out of coverage.

Offline-first design starts with the data model: what needs to be on the device, how changes are queued and how conflicts are resolved when the connection returns.

The interface matters just as much. Clear sync states, small downloadable packs and actions that never block on the network turn a frustrating experience into a dependable one.

The surprising part is how much these choices improve the app for users with perfect connectivity too: everything feels faster when it does not wait for a server.
